FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CIRS introduces Z-SkinTM, a skin-like membrane for added durability on biopsy training phantoms

Jan 27, 2014 (Norfolk, Va.) In an effort to increase the durability of their image-guided biopsy training phantoms, CIRS has developed a new skin-like membrane called Z-Skin™, which provides extra protection from desiccation following needle punctures and simulates the look and feel of skin during ultrasound-guided biopsy.

Image-guided biopsy training phantoms provide important hands-on experience for radiologists.  However, as air is often introduced into phantoms during biopsy training, echoic needle tracking and desiccation can reduce phantom utility. According to CIRS, Z-Skin helps minimize desiccation by adding a new layer of defense to CIRS phantoms’ already robust design.

To eliminate the issue of needle tracking within the phantom, Z-Skin was released in conjunction with the phantom manufacturer’s recently reformulated Zerdine®. Zerdine, the patented solid-elastic, tissue-mimicking material used in CIRS’ line of biopsy-training phantoms, now boasts minimized needle tracking and improved durability thanks to its new self-healing design.

CIRS believes the combination of these developments will significantly increase their phantoms durability and provide better value to their customers.

Products constructed of Z-Skin and the newest Zerdine formulation include the Image-Guided Abdominal Biopsy Phantom (Model 071A), Triple Modality 3D Abdominal Phantom (Model 057A), and Multi-Modality Breast Biopsy and Sonographic Trainer (Model 073).
